  This page provides an overview of primary and general election debates for the 2024 presidential election. The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is responsible for sponsoring, organizing, and setting guidelines for the presidential and vice presidential debates in the general election. However, the CPD has not yet released the dates and sites for the 2024 presidential election debates. This information is expected to be provided by the CPD in October or November 2023. Each political party has the option to hold its own series of primary debates. Republican debates are scheduled to begin in August 2023. As of May 16, 2023, the Democratic Party does not plan to hold primary debates. The guidelines for the Republican debates have not been announced yet. For reference, the Democratic National Committee announced its debate framework for the 2020 presidential election in December 2018.   Presidential Schedule Updates For 2024 State primary and presidential election dates for 2024 are listed below. Political parties use primaries and caucuses to determine which candidates will run for their state’s partisan offices in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.  Some states hold their state and presidential primaries on different dates as indicated in the tables. Legislative, congressional, gubernatorial, statewide office and presidential primary contests are on the ballots in 46 states. Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey and Virginia hold their legislative elections in odd-numbered years. The dates listed for those states apply to congressional and other races. The earliest state primaries for 2024 are held March 5, with the latest in mid-September. With 13 primaries each, June and August are the busiest months for state primaries.   Who is Running For President 2024 Donald Trump Announced: Nov. 15, 2022 Strengths : Former President Donald Trump has a stronghold with a significant portion of the GOP base. He has reshaped the Republican Party in his image, has shown he can raise money and has already won the presidency once. Weaknesses : Chaos and controversy seem to surround him. Trump was impeached twice and is under investigation in multiple states due to his role in inspiring the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and for his continued lies about the 2020 presidential election. Majorities have consistently disapproved of the job he did as president and continue to have a negative view of Trump personally.
