2024 Primary debates
This page provides an overview of primary and general election debates for the 2024 presidential election. The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is responsible for sponsoring, organizing, and setting guidelines for the presidential and vice presidential debates in the general election. However, the CPD has not yet released the dates and sites for the 2024 presidential election debates. This information is expected to be provided by the CPD in October or November 2023.
Each political party has the option to hold its own series of primary debates. Republican debates are scheduled to begin in August 2023. As of May 16, 2023, the Democratic Party does not plan to hold primary debates.
The guidelines for the Republican debates have not been announced yet. For reference, the Democratic National Committee announced its debate framework for the 2020 presidential election in December 2018. However, the Republican National Committee did not hold any sanctioned debates in the 2020 election.
Neither President Joe Biden nor former President Donald Trump, who are the leading candidates for their respective parties, appear to have any plans to participate in the primary debates in 2024. The Democratic National Committee's decision not to organize any debates has drawn criticism from Biden's two Democratic challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, as well as from some figures on the right, including Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Trump also indicated that he would not be participating in the GOP primary debates, expressing concerns about biased networks and hostile questioning.
Republican debates are typically held during the United States presidential election season, allowing candidates from the Republican party to engage in televised debates and discuss their policies and ideas. These debates play a crucial role in the election process, offering voters an opportunity to directly hear from the candidates. During the 2015-2016 presidential election cycle, there were several Republican debates, with one of the earliest and most notable being the first Republican primary debate hosted by Fox News on August 6, 2015. This debate featured ten Republican candidates: Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chris Christie, and John Kasich. The moderators for that debate were Bret Baier, Megyn Kelly, and Chris Wallace.
